The Animal Welfare League of Benzie County is a non-profit organization incorporated under Michigan Law in 1977. The activities of the League are supervised by 4 officers and a 6-member Board of Directors and are implemented entirely by volunteers. Funding is provided by membership fees, donations, memorials, canisters placed with local businesses, pancake breakfast, and yearly raffle, etc.

All meetings of the Animal Welfare League of Benzie County are held at the Benzie Animal Shelter, U.S. 31, Beulah the first Wednesday of every month, 7 P.M. April through December.

WHAT WE DO:

NEUTER-SPAY: Overpopulation in terms of the sheer volume of suffering it causes, is one of the most serious issues in the field of animal protection. To help curb the birth of unwanted puppies and kittens in Benzie County we offer an ongoing neuter-spay service whereby pet owners who find veterinary fees unaffordable are given financial assistance. Surgery costs for shelter adoptees are paid in full.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL: To animals found sick or injured, the League provides emergency medical treatment until the owner can be located. Whenever possible, unclaimed animals are restored to health and offered for adoption.

EDUCATION: The League also provides an educational program for elementary schools focusing on "Pet Responsibility" and the results of "Pet Irresponsibility." Each classroom is visited yearly. In addition, the League sponsors an Adopt-a-Teacher program thereby purchasing subscriptions to KIND NEWS (Kids in Nature's Defense) a monthly newspaper from the H.S.U.S. for each elementary child in grades 1-6. This provides year long attention on humane education.
