Books on Metal Work

These books are aimed at the home machine shop enthusiast. Save time by getting information from the pro's. These books are written by people who have done all the math and experimenting. You will waste a lot of time experimenting, while these books can save you time! Don't re-invent the wheel, buy these books!

Build Your Own Milling Machine

This is a book about building a horizontal milling machine. This mill will make its own cutters! To build this machine you will need to make your own castings, and Dave Gingery has an excellent book titled "The Charcoal Foundry" that you will find here.

Build Your Own Metal Lathe

Author Dave Gingery puts the instructions in a matter of fact format that moves you in a straight line from start to finish. This book contains techniques that you won't find in a year of experimenting on your own! You will also need to pour some sandcastings to build this lathe.

Dividing Head & Deluxe Accessories

This book details how to build accesories to expand the capacities of the metal lathe and milling machine, and shaper. You will build faceplates, chucks, indexing heads, a steady rest, and thread cutting gears that include left hand threading!

Metal Shaper

Considered by some an obsolete machine shop tool, the metal shaper cuts keyways, dovetails, gears, and more. Built according to these plans, the metal shaper has a 5x5" capacity and a 6" stroke. It has variable speed, variable cross feed and adjustable stroke length.
